Individuals residing in long term care settings are challenged daily with life altering losses that require them to give up independent living. They retain the desire to be meaningfully occupied, as independent as possible, and respectfully cared for. As a residential therapist, I work with residents to work through grief and loss issues, anxiety and depression, and psychological issues that often surface following placement. As a consultant to facilities, I am able to train staff on how to identify mental health issues and to work with residents in ways that aim to minimize the need for medication and maximize well-being through interactional and environmental strategies. While no one ever sets out to live in a nursing home, I’ve seen how some make the transition successfully and are able to live full lives in spite of their limitations. I work to foster my clients finding this for themselves.
